Time I - VI

Linoleum Relief Print 2023 14” x 14”

Statement

Why do we become the people we become? What events and moments shape our lives to create the identity and person we see today? How does aging, growing, and learning affect our identity? Time is a 6-layer linocut print depicting the changes in ourselves and others. We begin as a blank slate, impressionable to the things around us. What experiences, but also mundane moments cause us to become who we are? We become layered, each day shaped by and shaping the things around us. As we grow older, we grow more complicated and intricate, our identities and behaviors not easily explained or compartmentalized.

But I crave that type of compartmentalization. If only we could attribute behaviors and actions to one specific event or moment, recognizing in ourselves why we are the way that we are. It’s not that simple. Through this pattern, I express my desire for things to be more easily explained, more compartmentalized, but as you look down the print, it gets progressively more complicated and harder to decipher the differing layers. They begin to work together as a whole, converging to form the bottom row. Just like the print, we are complicated beings, multifaceted and layered, different experiences and times in our lives converging to form who we are today, all woven and intertwined together.
